ESL EFL INTERMEDIATE ENGLISH ADVANCED ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS This set of English conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced intermediate English to advanced English students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning. The questions feature a range of tenses and moods, such as the present tense, present subjunctive, perfect, imperfect, and conditional perfect. There are several questions focusing on i***f + subjunctive + conditional clauses***. There is a significant amount of implicit input on a range of grammatical concepts, particularly the use of tenses. I try to include as broad a range of language as I can in the questions, as the activity is not solely about practicing language, but also about actively learning it. Questions formats are varied, to ensure maximum opportunity to work with the different ways to ask questions in English. Some questions seek to elicit very similar information, but are asked in different language: this avoids learners simply parroting learned responses to fixed prompts. Frequent and regular engagement with the activity brings the best results: with the planning sheet, students can create and prepare increasingly detailed and more complex responses, reflecting their learning progress. I definitely find it useful to read through the questions together as a whole-group, with students offering initial suggested responses. This ensures everyone can actually access the language, and they also benefit a lot from each others’ ideas. As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group. These How to tell the time in Spanish challenge cards are perfect for developing Spanish language skills in general, as well as for practising and revising how to tell the time in Spanish. Each set has 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, with a full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. Challenge cards are really versatile too - we use them not only when we’re focusing on the target vocabulary and structures, but throughout the year as starters and refreshers. The goal is not simply to learn and practise how to tell time in Spanish, but also to enjoy working independently with language, and to feel confident about doing so. Students sometimes find learning how to tell the time in another language quite challenging, so the focused practice is really useful. The questions in this set are a straightforward introduction to, and practice of, analogue clock times in Spanish, and also to working and learning with challenge cards. I generally work with telling the time in Spanish quite quickly with my beginner Spanish students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example. There are two questions: ¿Qué hora es? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. I’ve only used the plural form of the question in these cards. The second question is Verdadero o falso? and students write either verdadero or falso - where the answer is falso remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation. The question card template enables students to apply their knowledge of language and time creatively and practically, which is integral to successful language learning. It’s also a really popular activity too - my students really enjoy creating questions for each other. I prepare each set of cards on different colour paper, so that when students are working with both sets, they can organise them into the relevant set really easily. The cards are numbered 1-60 in words, so students should recap those numbers before they work with the task cards. There are Spanish Numbers 0-100 lists in my store which you can download for free - my students find them really helpful. Each set comprises the following non-editable files: 60 cards, 6 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Laminating is definitely worth the extra prep time and expense, as the cards are far more learner-friendly, and stay in excellent condition for a long time, so you’ll be able to recycle them for years. 2-page answer recording sheet. Best printed double-sided to save paper. My students generally use their class workbooks to note their answers, though I do use recording sheets for more formal assessment purposes. 2-page answer key, again best printed double-sided, and laminated if possible. For me, answer keys are an integral element to this kind of learning activity. They offer students an additional opportunity to engage with language, and to develop more independence in their learning. They’re also a great teacher time-saver, which is always a good thing! There are 150 conjugations across 3 differentiated conjugation challenges in each workbook, 900 conjugations in total. I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for home learning, for practice and revision during vacation and at return to class, and for cover lessons - they’re really versatile, and ideal for KS3 & KS4 Italian students who are getting to grips with conjugation in Italian, building their verb vocabulary, and working regularly with more complex texts, which feature a range of tenses, and including authentic resources. They’re also really useful for KS5 Italian A Level Italian students who are beginning their advanced Italian programme. The workbooks focus on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. Language learners do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and with the Italian conditional tense for example, those with English as a first language frequently look for a word that is the equivalent of would, until they familiarise themselves with the fact that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb ending. I see this a lot with the future tense too, and tend to introduce both tenses quite closely together. It’s also easy to confuse the future tense endings with the conditional tense endings, and targeted practice helps to address that really well. Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written Italian is accurate, and that their understanding of Italian across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Each set is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Italian-English and English-Italian. Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Italian across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Italian, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Italian. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Italian verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes and Next Steps template which students visit regularly - it really does encourage them to think about where they are now, how confident they feel, and what they might need to work on a little more to be absolutely sure of their conjugation skills. We also note down any new verbs we meet, which enables students to build up their own verb vocabulary bank. These***Christmas*** word searches are a real winner - the Christmas-theme seems to be a great motivator! There are 33 German Christmas words, and I’ve chosen a selection of more generic Christmas words, and also some which are very German-specific, such as Sankt Nikolaus and Knecht Ruprecht - we don’t attempt to learn all these - the objective of the word searches is to engage with German, to really focus on the individual words, genders and articles, and to have lots of practice at general recall of vocab. There is an increasing challenge through the grids, and that differentiation does ensure that all students are challenged. There are 5 German to German grids, with a vocab list to fill in too. There are also 5 English to German grids, with a vocab list to complete - that’s a great way to really get students’ recall skills working. Students can identify the level of challenge by the increasing size of the grid, number of words to search for, and the direction the words appear in, which they can see by the direction of the arrows at the top of the grids. Answer keys are essential in my view, and I always give them to students. Not only are they a great teacher-time saver, they really do give students an additional opportunity to engage with language - they also love to ‘mark’ each other’s work! I’ve put a couple of extra challenges in too, to encourage students to look really carefully at the words - for example, they may have to find candles and work out what that is in German - only the prompt die Adventskerze appears in the German Christmas vocabulary reference list. German Christmas Word Searches #2 The searches increase in challenge from Grid 1-10, and offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with***German Christmas vocabulary***, which is a great springboard for discussion on***Christmas traditions and practices in Germany and other German-speaking countries***, comparing them to other traditions and practices students know, but also working on reading, writing, spelling and German language skills in general. Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. There are also five grid templates for learners to create their own searches for each other - this is a really popular activity, and I’ve found that my learners often like to create grids for family at home too. The templates enable learners to apply their language practically and creatively, which is really important at this stage of German language development. There is also an answer key for each word search in this set. There is a single word search per page, portrait format. I like to ensure that text is accessible to all learners - and at this stage of their learning, it’s absolutely essential that language looks accessible and manageable. Some of the more challenging grids do look a little cramped, as a good number of the German words are quite long. There are 50 German Christmas-themed words across the word searches - it’s not necessary for students to learn all the words explicitly - over time, they tend to become familiar with all of them anyway. Looking for unfamiliar words in the grids really works well for implicit learning. There’s a full alphabetical vocab list, which is a great long-term German Christmas vocabulary reference resource, which my students like to add to when they can. There are a range of phonemes and sounds too, such as ***the letter j (uvas rojas/ajo)***, which is a sound particular to Spanish, and the***letter ñ (piña / champiñones)***, as the tilde + n plays a very important role in Spanish pronunciation. There are 10 Spanish to Spanish grids, labelled with a lemon/carrots, where learners are prompted with the Spanish words, and look for them in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice, each grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. There are also 10 English to Spanish grids, labelled with a raspberry/pepper, where the prompt words are given in English, and learners have to find the Spanish equivalent in the grid. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid, and each consecutive grid has an increasing number of directions in order to increase the challenge. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and English, and facilitates learner independence. There is an answer key grid for each word search, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. ***Answer key***s are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, and they genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! The word searches are in landscape format, as I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners, as it mirrors the direction of reading from left to right in both Spanish and English. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. I definitely find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. Students do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language with the patterns and rules of the language they are learning. For example, with the German imperfect tense, with students whose first language is English, I frequently see attempts such as ich war machen for I was doing / making or similarly ich machte arbeiten for I did work. Students also tend to look for a direct translation of the notion of ***used to…***, before they understand that the notion is implicit in the tense itself. I refer frequently the difference in usage between English and German, and this is important particularly when explaining when and in which contexts to use the various tenses. Though the workbooks focus solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are fixed conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written German is accurate, and that their understanding of German across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Students become very familiar and confident the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations certainly help to embed that successfully. I’ve used these ‘quick conjugations’ for many years with my German classes. My students definitely find them to be a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate essential verbs in German. For example, language learners to often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and with students with English as a first language I frequently see students learning the conditional tense getting a little confused by the absence of a direct equivalent of would, before they really grasp that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb stem + relevant pronoun ending, which they may have already met when working with the future tense, but need more practice with. In turn, they often mix up conditional tense and future tense endings, so it can be really useful to introduce both tenses fairly simultaneously. In this way, students can compare and contrast verb endings, across a broader range of texts, including authentic resources, which really helps them consolidate learning. In my experience, students are able to move beyond any confusion between the two tenses really quickly. The workbooks are really versatile, and I use them in a range of learning contexts, such as practice during the introductory phase, free-choice activity in class time, home learning or cover lessons. My students like to have several opportunities to go through the workbooks several times a semester across a whole school year - they find it really useful for mapping their progress and developing overall understanding and competence. Each set is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Spanish-English and English-Spanish, useful for longer-term reference too Three differentiated conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Spanish across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Spanish, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Spanish. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Spanish verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from a Spanish prompt. Notes and Next Steps template to encourage my students to reflect on their progress, and think about what they can reasonably and realistically do to meet learning targets and move on - we revisit the conjugations, and the Notes and Next Steps, regularly - sometimes students haven’t quite embedded learning before it’s time to move on, so revisiting for 10-minute ‘chunks’ is really popular with them. Students not any new verbs they learn, which in time builds into a really comprehensive verb vocabulary bank. We also use the Notes and Next Steps to inform, guide and focus whole-group discussion on learning and progress in general, which is a really popular activity. answer key six pages in book format. Answer keys are essential for this kind of learning activity, as they do provide a really essential additional opportunity for students to engage with language, and my students prefer to work and learn independently, assessing their own progress, either individually, in pairs or in small groups. I move onto conjugation quite quickly in my language learning programmes, so that students can apply language practically and creatively, which is essential for progressing in language learning, as well as consolidating language and grammatical concepts. The workbooks focus on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, though it’s definitely useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. For example, language learners to often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are learning, and with students with English as a first language I frequently see students learning the conditional tense getting a little confused by the absence of a direct equivalent of would, before they really grasp that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb stem + relevant pronoun ending, which they may have already met when working with the future tense, but need more practice with. In turn, they often mix up conditional tense and future tense endings, so it can be really useful to introduce both tenses fairly simultaneously. In this way, students can compare and contrast verb endings, across a broader range of texts, including authentic resources, which really helps them consolidate learning.
